This project was implemented under PCF’s Strategic Goal 3 – Engaging with and supporting communities and institutions in the region. The project built on recommendations from PCF’s Melanesian Symposium that was held in September 2008. Sir Rabbie Namaliu, a respected leader and former PNG Prime Minister, called for the facilitation of meaningful engagement between NZ Maori and Melanesia, in particular PNG. The project recognizes that well developed and successful Maori enterprises may have valuable contributions to make towards improving asset investment and resource utilization in PNG.
PCF has supported a group of informed Maori sector experts with international focus to conduct a scoping visit to PNG. Spearheading this engagement were travelling group of consultants and representatives from Maori organizations. Opportunities for structured formal Maori engagement were investigated.
