Introduction
This resource is the product of a project sponsored by the Pacific Cooperation Foundation. It was carried out with student teachers and their lecturers from The Auckland University Faculty of Education in 2006. The student teachers produced social studies resources when they returned to New Zealand. Their lecturers reflected and wrote about what the student teachers had learned from the overall experience. The Pacific Cooperation Foundation has generously sponsored the production of this CD ROM in order for the team to share just some of what they have learned, with New Zealand-based teachers and their students.
There are three teaching units.
Unit One introduces Samoa and helps students to explore several general features. Unit One can be used to provide context for either Unit Two, or Unit Three.
Unit Two looks at Ecotourism in Samoa. It has been written for senior primary learners.
Unit Three looks at globalisation, particularly the notion of Global Culture. It has been written for junior secondary school learners.
There is a teachers´ section.
This section provides the connections between Unit Two and Three, and the draft school curriculum (which is to become confirmed November 2007).
This section contains several website links – to sites which are additional sources of information about Samoa, and several other Pacific nations.
Also included are professional readings which may be of interest and use to teachers who are developing and critically reflecting on their own knowledge of the Pacific peoples, both in the Pacific Region and within New Zealand.
