Should I Join the Defence Force?

by Regan Wineera

Do today's youth still perceive the Defence Force as a worthwhile career choice, and what implications does this hold for New Zealand?

In a recent article by David Fisher in the New Zealand Herald, the spotlight is on the recruiting and retention crisis affecting key positions within the armed forces. This crisis has resulted in unmanned roles, leading to ships being docked and immobilised. The exodus from the armed forces has been largely attributed to concerns about pay and the nature of operations.

This issue is significant, given New Zealand's growing reliance on the Defence Force for resources and disaster relief in the Pacific. One of the critical implications is the impact on heavy transport vessels, which play a vital role in providing resources and transporting equipment to the Pacific.

Many young individuals ponder, "What's in it for me?"

Why should they consider joining the Defence Force, and what benefits does it offer? There are indeed advantages to becoming part of the New Zealand Armed Forces, particularly through scholarship schemes. These programs are a boon for those unable to afford university or averse to incurring student debt. The Defence Force offers a promising career path, exchanging a return of service obligation for student loan repayments, presenting a practical choice for financing one's studies and future career.

For the youth of New Zealand, the Defence Force can serve as a stepping stone, opening doors, providing training, and facilitating qualifications. The opportunity to travel the world while being paid to work is an enticing prospect, making it an appealing option after completing high school or university. Few other jobs offer such a unique chance for global exposure and professional development.

Considering the financial challenges often accompanying university life, the combination of earning money while studying and the promise of job security upon graduation is an attractive proposition. This arrangement not only supports students financially but also instils a sense of reassurance.

Despite the current attrition rate and staff crisis faced by the Defence Force, there are compelling reasons for the youth of New Zealand to consider a career in the military. Job prospects, training opportunities, education, and other benefits make it worthwhile.

Even for those uncertain about their future career paths, the Ministry of Social Development, in collaboration with the Defence Force and Ministry of Defence, offers limited-service volunteering. This six-week course, tailored for individuals aged 18 to 24, provides military-based skills, training, and career advancement opportunities.

As one trainee said, "Join! It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to restart your working career and boost your motivation to step out of your comfort zone" (Trainee Leota, 2022).

The Defence Force offers diverse career options, ranging from disaster relief and international cooperation with the United Nations peacekeeping forces to branch and trade-dependent roles. A Ministry of Youth Development report underscores common themes attracting young people to Defence Force careers, including free training, quality education, scholarships, apprenticeships, paid training, increased opportunities, and valuable qualifications in professional environments.

In conclusion, there are myriad reasons for the youth of New Zealand to consider joining the Defence Force, making it a viable and rewarding career choice.
